GRAND RAPIDS, MI – On June 27th, 2018, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Rapids Police Department worked in conjunction to locate and apprehend a subject making threats to go to a business in Grand Rapids and kill multiple people.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office received information that a 36 year old man from the Lowell area had made multiple threats to go to a business in Grand Rapids where his ex-girlfriend was working and shoot her and everyone else in the business.
Grand Rapids Police responded quickly to secure the business, victim, and other employees. Officer’s obtained the subjects information and determined that he resided in the Saranac/Lowell area in the 700 block of Whites Bridge Rd. and requested the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office to attempt to locate him.
Deputies from the sheriff’s office responded to the area. After a short time, deputies observed the suspect driving near the residence and attempted to stop him. The subject refused to stop and a short vehicle pursuit ensued. After the vehicle was stopped, the subject fled on foot for a short distance where deputies caught him and took him into custody. There were no injuries to officers or the subject.
A search warrant was executed at the residence where firearms were located as well as electronic devices used to commit the crime.
The subject was identified as Jason Duane Proper, 36-years-old, from Lowell. He was lodged on several felony charges and arraigned on Thursday June 28th, 2018, on the following charges:
Aggravated Stalking (5 year felony)
Using a Computer to Commit a Crime (Agg Stalking) (5 year felony)
False Report or Threat of Terrorism (20 year felony)
Using a Computer to Commit a Crime (False Threats) (20 year felony)
Felon in Possession of a Firearm (5 year felony)
Felon in Possession of Ammunition (5 year felony)
Fleeing and Eluding Police (2 year felony)
Resting and Obstructing Police (2 year felony)
Possession of Marijuana (1 year misdemeanor)
Proper is being held on a $250,000.00 cash/surety bond.
