Oakland County Deputy Injured during Arrest of Commerce Township Man

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI – An Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured on Wednesday July 3rd, 2018, during the arrest of a Commerce Township man.

At 5:05AM deputies responded to the 10 block of Bayberry Dr. for a Domestic Assault complaint.

Upon arrival, Deputies were met by the victim who was waiting in front of the home. The 37-year-old woman stated that she and her boyfriend had been arguing. During the argument the 32-year-old suspect held her down and forcibly took her car keys in order to prevent her from leaving. The suspect then went into the bedroom and came back out holding a crossbow and a shotgun and began pacing around the residence. The victim was able to exit the home and call the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center via 9-1-1 for assistance.

Deputies made contact with the suspect and asked him to exit the home. The suspect became verbally combative with the officers. Deputies placed the suspect under arrest at which time he was secured in handcuffs.

While escorting the suspect off the porch, he became combative attempting to pull away from the Deputy. The Deputy attempted to maintain control of the suspect at which time they lost their balance and fell off the porch onto the concrete walkway below falling approximately 4 feet to the ground.

The Deputy hit his face on the concrete sustaining a 2 inch laceration to his right cheek requiring immediate medical attention. The suspect was not injured in the fall.

The Commerce Township Fire Department and Community EMS responded to the scene. The Deputy was transported by Paramedics to Providence Park Hospital in Novi for medical treatment where he is listed in stable condition. He was released several hours alter and will be off work.

The suspect was lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending the issuance of criminal charges for Domestic Assault and Resist and Obstruct a Police Officer.
