ELK TOWNSHIP, MI – On Saturday July 7th, 2018, at approximately 3:10 P.M., the Elk Township Fire Department was flagged down while returning to their hall from the Port Sanilac parade. Elk Township fire fighters notified Sanilac Central Dispatch of a single UTV rollover crash at the intersection of E. Applegate and S. Goetze Road in Washington Township. Sanilac County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to investigate.
According to Sheriff’s Deputies, a 50-year-old man from Kenockee was driving a 2016 Polaris RZR Turbo south on Goetze Road when he left the road in order to avoid another UTV in his group that had stopped at the intersection. He lost control of the UTV and rolled the UTV onto its’ passenger side.
The passenger of the RZR, a 43-year-old Mccomb man had his hand out the side of the UTV when it rolled and part of his hand was caught between the roll cage and the road causing injury.
The passenger was treated on scene by Sanilac EMS and was taken to McKenzie Hospital for treatment of his injuries and later transferred to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. The driver was not injured in the accident.
Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors and the occupants of the UTV’s names are not being released pending possible charges.
