PONTIAC, MI – Oakland County Sheriff’s Detectives are trying to determine if a 14 year old boy was accidentally shot or was the shooting premeditated. At this time they are ruling the death as a homicide.
On Monday July 9th, 2018, at 2:39AM, Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 100 block of Willard Street on the report of a subject who had been shot in the chest. Prior to the Deputies arrival, the victim was transported to McLaren-Oakland Hospital by witnesses at the scene.
The 14-year-old boy was later pronounced dead by the attending physician.
Deputies responded to the hospital. The 20-year-old suspect, who was also at McLaren-Oakland Hospital, was taken into custody. Deputies transported him to the Pontiac Substation to speak with Detectives.
Detectives were notified and responded to the scene. The OCSO Forensic Science Laboratory was requested and responded to process the scene. Deputies provided death notification to the next of kin. An Investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the hospital to begin their investigation.
The 20-year-old suspect had a handgun in the home that was under a mattress. He asked the 14-year-old boy to move from the bed while he retrieved the weapon. He told Detectives the gun went off accidentally striking the 14-year-old victim. He then drove him to the hospital.
The gun was recovered by Detectives. An autopsy has been scheduled. The incident remains under investigation. The responsible was lodged at the OCJ.
