ROMULUS, MI – A 7-year-old girl was killed when she was struck on I-94 trying to cross the freeway after she was able to escape the vehicle that her alleged drunk father had crashed with the two of them inside.
At about 3:30AM on Sunday July 15th, 2018, Troopers at the Metro South Post were dispatched to eastbound I-94 & Inkster for a female driver who believed she hit a pedestrian.
Troopers made initial contact with the woman. They checked the vehicle and did not see any sign or evidence that she had hit a person. Troopers checked the area around the vehicle and were unable to locate a person or animal in the area.
A short time later, Troopers learned that the Romulus Police Department had been investigating a crash on eastbound I-94 near Merriman Rd involving a suspected drunk driver.
The father was east bound on I-94 when he lost control of his vehicle and struck an abandon vehicle on the side of the road. The little girl was able to climb out of the wreckage and was trying to get help with a cell phone.
The 7-year-old girl began sending Romulus police text messages asking for help. Police were able to locate the phone by pinging it. She had contacted police believing that her father had been killed in the accident.
Calls and text messages started coming into MSP and Romulus Police about 20 minutes later, at about 3:50AM, concerning the possibility that a pedestrian had been struck on I-94. The child had attempted to cross I-94 and was struck by woman who had been eastbound on I-94 at Inkster Road that MSP had been dispatched to speak with.
The child was killed instantly. Further investigation determined that the drunk driver from the crash Romulus Police were handling was the father of the 7 year old.
Notification has been made to the girls mother. The child is from Detroit. Romulus Police are investigating the drunk driving portion of the investigation and MSP is investigating the fatal crash. The driver of the vehicle that struck the child has been released.
The father has been arrested and is now facing charges.
At this time no further information is going to be released due to the prosecution of this incident.
Eastbound I-94 was closed at Merriman Rd for several hours while police conducted their investigation. The freeway reopened at about 12:00PM.
