Walled Lake Drowning Ruled as Suicide

WALLED LAKE, MI – At approximately 4:00pm on Wednesday, July 18th, 2018, the body of a 37 year old man was reported floating on the surface of Walled Lake by a passing boater.Stop Suicide

The Walled Lake Police Department immediately responded to the scene and requested the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue Team to respond and initiate recovery efforts.

In conjunction with Walled Lake P.D., the OCSO Dive Rescue Team entered the lake and recovered the body of the man floating in 10 feet of water. It was found that the victim had tied cinder blocks to his feet prior to entering the water. Due to the condition of the body, it had become buoyant and rose to the surface.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.) the victim had a history of personal struggles with prior suicide attempts.

He was last seen by family members Sunday morning around 6:30 am when he launched a canoe onto the lake. He was reported missing to Walled Lake P.D. on Wednesday afternoon. According to family members, it was not uncommon for the victim to leave for several days on end without notifying them of his whereabouts.

The Oakland County Medical Examiner is ruling the incident a suicide.
