CUSTER, MI – A Mason County man was killed early Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle struck the back-end of a pickup truck that had slowed in the roadway.
At 12:19PM on Sunday, July 22nd, 2018, Deputies from with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office in Ludington responded to a vehicle vs motorcycle crash in the 3100 block of Reek Rd (between Dewey and Sugar Grove) in Mason County’s Sherman Township.
The preliminary findings indicate the crash occurred when a Chevy Silverado pickup truck, being driven by a 28 year-old Mason County man southbound on Reek Rd., slowed for a dog that was running along the roads edge. The pickup truck driver had slowed just over the crest of a hill.
A 32 year-old Mason County man was also southbound on Reek Rd., operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle, crested the hill and could not stop, striking the rear of the pickup truck.
The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital.
The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and at this time, speed or alcohol cannot be ruled out pending toxicology results and crash re-constructionist reports.
Life EMS, Fountain Area Fire and Rescue, and the Michigan State Police all assisted at the scene.
The case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and names are being withheld pending family notification.
