12 yr old Loses Part of Hand from Fireworks

BERRIEN, MI – On Sunday July 22nd, 2018, at approximately 10:10PM, MSP Troopers were dispatched to assist ambulance personnel regarding a 12 year old boy who received severe injuries to his hands and face from a firework that had exploded that he had tried to ignite.Ambulance

Initial investigations revealed the injuries were sustained when a “mortar” style firework instantly exploded while being ignited by the boy. Two adults near the scene were not injured.

Medic One ambulance transported the victim to Borgess Memorial hospital in Kalamazoo where he was then transferred to the University of Michigan hospital in Ann Arbor for surgery.

Injuries included the partial amputation of one hand and minor injuries to the other hand and face. The incident remains under investigation.
