“On Sunday we were notified at 12:42 pm that a diver was being transported to the Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace with CPR in progress,” said Clarmont. The investigation showed the deceased was with another diver and third person who captained the boat. The two made two trips down diving and rising in tandem. On the second dive both divers had surfaced when one diver noticed the other struggling and assisted him into the boat.

Once on the boat they headed to Mackinaw City. 911 was called and an ambulance was staged at the state dock. The subject was then transported to St. Ignace by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

“At this time we are not sure what caused the death of the diver,” said Clarmont.

The Sheriff said part of the process in the investigation will be an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death and to have the dive equipment inspected. The Sheriff also stated this was a private party dive and all three people are from downstate.

At this time names are not being released pending notification of family.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Emmet County EMS and the Mackinaw City Police Department.
