CHEYBOYGAN, MI – The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the person who died as a result of a diving accident in the Straits of Mackinac on Sunday August 12th, 2018.
The victim has been identified as Jesse Tabor, 44-years-old, of Owosso MI.
“On Sunday we were notified at 12:42 pm that a diver was being transported to the Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace with CPR in progress,” said Sheriff Dale Clarmont. The investigation showed Jesse Tabor was with another diver, Michael Petchauer, 64-years-old, of Holland MI and third person who captained the boat, Phillip Storms, 58-years-old, of Hudsonville MI.
The two made two trips down diving and rising in tandem. On the second dive both divers had surfaced when one diver noticed the other struggling and assisted him into the boat.
Once on the boat they headed to Mackinaw City. 911 was called and an ambulance was staged at the state dock. Jesse Tabor was then transported to St. Ignace by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Clarmont stated the autopsy has been completed but the results could take up to two months to learn the cause and manner of death. The dive equipment should be examined within the next week or two.
“At this stage in the investigation it appears to be a tragic diving accident,” said Clarmont.
