PONTIAC, MI – The life of a 19-year-old man in Pontiac was taken when his friend picked up a firearm, pulled the trigger, and accidentally shot him in the chest on Tuesday, August 14th, 2018.
Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Waterford Regional Fire Department, at approximately 3:20PM, responded to the 40 Block of Sallee Lane on the report of a shooting victim.
Upon their arrival, Deputies observed a 19-year-old man, from Pontiac, was lying on the living room floor and was being treated by Paramedics for a gunshot wound to the chest.
Deputies also observed a black semi-automatic handgun on a table in the living room and a single bullet hole in the north side interior wall.
Three individuals were in the living when Deputies arrived. They were detained and transported to the Pontiac Substation to speak with Detectives. All of them indicated to Detectives that while the 19-year-old victim was seated on the living room couch, the 21-year-old man who is also a resident of Pontiac and the registered owner of the weapon, began to look closely at the pistol. As the 21-year-old subject was handling the weapon, he pulled the trigger. The weapon discharged and struck the 19-year-old victim in the chest.
All those present in the home were friends including the person who discharged the gun. The 19-year-old was transported to McLaren Hospital by Paramedics from Star EMS where he died to his injuries.
Detectives responded to the scene to continue with the investigation. An Investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office was advised of the death. The Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy. The preliminary investigation indicates this incident is an accidental discharge of a firearm.
All parties were released after interviews were finished. The case will be presented to the Prosecutor’s Office for review when completed.
