PORT HURON, MI – Joshua Michael Bauman, 30-years-old, of Mount Morris, was arraigned on Saturday August 25th, 2018, for the murder of an off duty Port Huron Police Department Lieutenant.
Lt. Joel Wood, 45-years-old, of Greenwood Township, was shot and killed at an apartment building in the 4700 block of Atkins Road allegedly by Joshua Bauman. Bauman is also accused of injuring two other people, a woman, was an administrative clerk with a local department and his ex-wife.
According to St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckley, deputies received a call of shots fired with multiple victims shortly before 1:00 a.m. When they arrived in the area, they located a 29 year old woman and a 57 year old man, who had both sustained gunshot wounds. It was learned that the woman had run to the man’s residence and pounded on his door, attempting to get away from the suspect. The suspect chased and shot the woman and also the neighbor. Both were transported to McLaren Port Huron Hospital by Tri-Hospital EMS.
As officers investigated further, they found the body of Joel Wood who had been shot multiple times.
The shootings happened about 12:52 a.m. Friday morning. A BOLO was put out statewide but was concentrated in southeast Michigan because it was believed that Bauman was headed to the Detroit area. State Police were stationed on the various freeways watching for the alledged killers vehicle. Border Patrol was also notified to be on watch for Bauman as well.
Bauman was finally located in Southfield at a Marathon gas station on Telegraph Road at 10 Mile and was taken into custody without incident just before 5:00AM.
Joshua Bauman was arraigned on the following charges:
- 1st degree murder
- 2 counts: assault with intent to murder
- Home invasion
- Felony firearms
He was remanded back to jail and denied bond. Bauman is scheduled back in court on September 4th.
