CALEDONIA, MI – September 4, 2018 at approximately 11:00 a.m. the Kent County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 9000 Block of Jordan River Dr SE at the request of a family member who asked that they check the well-being of the caller’s parents.Nathan Board

Shortly after arriving, deputies located the married couple in question deceased inside their home. They have been identified as Patty Syrek, 62-years-old and Theodore Syrek, 66-years-old, of Caledonia.

Their son-in-law has been charged with their murders. Nathan Board, 33-years-old, has been charged with the double homicide. Board is facing two counts of open murder and two counts of felony murder.

The Syreks were found dead in their bedroom.  An autopsy determined they died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Nathan Board was arrested and arraigned on charges after he punched a homicide investigator. At the time he was jailed, he was held on a $1,000,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned on Friday for the two murders.

During his arraignment Friday afternoon, more details emerged in the case.  Nathan Board was married to the Syrek’s daughter Sarah.  Sarah was the person who placed the call to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office requesting a well-being check on her parents.  She told authorities that she and Nathan were in the process of divorcing and that he was not dealing with that very well.

Sarah Board provided information to authorities that her husband was on medication due to him being bi-polar.  Nathan told detectives that he had not been taking his medication, according to the affidavit. He told them that he does remember killing them but for the most part the last week had been a blur to him.

The judge denied bail for Nathan Board due to the severity of the charges.  He was remanded back to jail until his next court appearance which is scheduled for September 19, at 9:30 a.m.
