DETROIT, MI – The 5-year-old child who was shot and killed during what has been called a home invasion has been identified as Isabella Coleman.
Shortly before 11:00 PM on Thursday September 13th, 2018, in the 19000 block of Lyndon off of Evergreen, a 22-year-old mother, Dejiza Coleman, and 5-year-old child were shot while they slept in the back bedroom of a home. Both the mother and child were transported to Sinai-Grace Hospital. Dejiza Coleman was shot at least 16 times. The child was pronounced dead upon arrival. The mother remains in critical condition.
Two suspects have been arrested. One at the scene, the aunt of the little girl and the sister of the mother and another person was taken into custody one away from the crime. Chief James Craig said that there was an ongoing family dispute that may have triggered this terrible incident. There was a very loud argument between the sisters that witnesses told officers about when they were interviewed.
At 4:50AM a homicide task force went to the home of a relative of the child in the 9200 block of Evergreen Rd. Officers went to execute a search warrant. The 46-year-old man was on the couch when officers entered the house. He was armed with an AR assault type of pistol. A Detroit Police officer shot and killed the man. 10 bindles of heroin were confiscated from the home where the man was shot and killed who is connected to the incident.
Because the investigation is ongoing Chief Craig was limited in what he had to tell media.
