Flint Man charged in shooting death of 7-year-old girl

FLINT, MI – Charges were announced today against a Flint man related to the shooting death of 7-year-old Zaniyah Burns on Tuesday, October 9th.Jamil Griggs mugshot

17-year-old Jamil Griggs has been formally charged for the murder of Zaniyah Burns. He is facing 18 felony counts in the death of the little girl, including 1st degree premeditated murder.

Griggs is charged with:
1 count of first degree murder, 1 count of discharging a firearm at a building causing death, 7 counts of assault with intent to murder, and 9 counts of felony firearm.

Count I: Homicide – 1st Degree
Penalty: Life without parole

Count II: Discharging a firearm at a building causing death

Penalty: Life or any term of years

Count III: Felony Firearm

Penalty: Mandatory two years in prison preceding and consecutive to
underlying felony

Counts IV – X: Assault with intent to murder
Penalty: Life or any term of years

Flint Police and Michigan State Police were dispatched to a home on West Austin Avenue in the City of Flint about 8:00 PM on October 9th in response to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, 7-year-old Zaniyah Burns was found with a gunshot wound to her head and was later pronounced dead.

“The shooting death of Zaniyah Burns has shocked and saddened our entire community,” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. “Our hearts go out to her family and we will do all we can to seek justice under the law,” he said.
