DETROIT, MI – Courtney Deandre Sweeney, 30-years-old, of Clinton Township, and Dajuan Anton Irving, 29-years-old, of Warren, have both been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Dorian Dante Heath, 24-years-old, of Sterling Heights.

On November 7, 2018 at approximately 2:20 a.m., the victim was a front seat passenger in a vehicle with three other men. They stopped for a red light at Gratiot and St. Antoine in Detroit. It is alleged that Courtney Sweeney and Dajuan Irving, in two separate vehicles, fired weapons into the victims’ vehicle.

The driver of the car with Dorian Heath sped away from the gunfire and flagged down Detroit Police officers who escorted the men to a local hospital for treatment. Heath was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The other victims were treated for their injuries.

Courtney Sweeney and Dajuan Irving have both been charged with Murder – First Degree, Weapons Discharge from a Vehicle Causing Death, three counts of Assault with Intent to Murder and five counts of Felony Firearm.

Both were arraigned out-county on November 10, 2018 before Magistrate Vesta Svenson. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for November 20, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for November 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Ronald Giles in 36th District Court. Both defendants were remanded to jail.

It was previously reported that the incident took place near the Annex Nightclub and that the victim was shot outside of the venue while he was seated in a Lexus.

It was not until today that MI Headlines become aware of an entry that was posted on social media on November 8th, 2018, by Andrus McDonald with the Annex Nightclub. He posted on Facebook the following:

Firstly, and most importantly, a young man lost his life to a senseless act of violence early Wednesday morning. It was newsworthy in its own right and most every major local media outlet jumped on the story – as they should have. However, it was repeatedly and wrongly reported that this shooting took place outside Annex Nightclub.

Despite our attempts to provide them with accurate information they decided to run the story as is without even asking for a quote or comment from Annex and, obviously, doing no follow up with DPD. Sad. The shooting actually took place nearly two miles from Annex. There was no connection to Annex other then the route the victims took while fleeing. Neither the shooter nor the victims had been at Annex that evening.

Annex isn’t the bigger story here.
