HILLMAN, MI – At about 3:15 PM today, Wednesday December 12th, 2018, detectives from the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team arrested a 42-year-old Hillman man on charges related to possession of child sexually abusive material and using a computer to commit a crime. Following the arrest, the man was lodged in the Montmorency County Jail.

Huron Undercover Narcotics Team detectives arrested a 42-year-old Hillman man for one count of possession of child sexually abusive material and one count of using a computer to commit a crime. Both are felonies punishable by 4-7 years in prison.

The warrant also sites a SORA (Sex Offender Registry Act) notice for violation of the act for a tier one offence. The suspect in the incident had previously been convicted of 2 counts of criminal sexual conduct, second degree, involving a minor child.

The investigation began in August of this year when concerned citizens of the Hillman area alerted the Montmorecy County Sheriff of suspicious activity. Specifically, parents of female children, ages 10-16, reported that the children were receiving requests to be followed on a common social media app and these requests were made by a local sex offender. HUNT was asked to investigate the allegations. An extensive 3-month long investigation resulted in today’s arrest of the Montmorency County man.

Portions of the investigation continue and may result in additional charges pending the review by the Montmorency County Prosecuting Attorney.

The suspect was lodged in the Montmorency County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.

HUNT was assisted by Michigan State Police 7th District Emergency Services Team, MSP 7th District Computer Crimes Unit, the Montmorency County Sheriff Department and the Michigan State Police, Alpena Post.
