ALPENA, MI – MSP Troopers from the Alpena Post were sent to the area of Diamond Point Road near US-23 on December 12th, 2018, at about 3:10AM to investigate a vehicle theft.auto theft

The victim reported leaving his car unlocked and running in the parking lot while he made a quick trip into the Diamond Point Shell gas station. An unknown person entered his vehicle, a 1993 Mazda Miata, and drove off at a high rate of speed.

During their investigation, the troopers were contacted by the Alpena Police Department (APD) with a possible lead. APD had earlier dealt with a disorderly subject at MidMichigan Medical Center Hospital in Alpena. The subject was  asked to leave the property. The address of the person was found to be in Greenbush.

The distance between Alpena to Greenbush is some 40 miles away which at normal driving speed would be about one hour.

While Troopers started towards Greenbush to investigate, nearby Iosco County Deputies drove to the suspect’s address in an attempt to locate the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was located parked near the residence. Upon arriving, Troopers located the suspect hiding in his bedroom. He was arrested on probable cause that he has stolen the vehicle. That car has since been returned to the owner.

Upon reviewing the case, the Alpena County Prosecutor, Edward Black, charged 42-year-old John Cox, of Greenbush, with one count of unlawfully Driving Away an Automobile. Cox was arraigned in the 88th District Court on December 13th. He was given a $10,000/10% cash bond.
