SUNFIELD, MI – On Tuesday January 1st, 2019 at 10:38PM, Ionia County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 4000 block of East Muskgrove Hwy in Sebewa Township on a reported burglary in progress. The original dispatch indicated that an intruder had forced his way into the home and had claimed to the startled homeowners that he was being chased by someone else who was trying to kill him.
The homeowner of the residence, once arming himself with a firearm went outside with the man but could not locate anyone or any evidence that anyone else was outside or had been chasing the intruder when he came into their home uninvited. When the parties re-entered the home a short time later, the man reportedly began acting very erratically and became very angry with the homeowner, and then assaulted the homeowner.
The homeowner then discharged his firearm at the intruder, striking and killing the man prior to Ionia County Sheriff’s Deputies making contact with the parties at the residence. Evidence was collected at the scene of the shooting and will be processed and submitted to the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office for review. The homeowner who fired the shot that killed the intruder has not been arrested at this time, pending Prosecutor review, and is cooperating with law enforcement.
The dead intruder is identified as Justin Eddy, 40-years-old, of Lansing. There is no known connection between Justin Eddy and the homeowners, and it is unknown why Eddy chose that particular home to enter, although drugs and alcohol are suspected factors in this case.
Further investigation also determined that the vehicle that Justin Eddy had arrived at the home on Muskgrove Hwy with had been stolen from another residence approximately 2 miles east in the 2000 block of E. Muskgrove Hwy. Investigation at that property led deputies to finding a pickup truck registered to Justin Eddy on that property still running with its headlights on. Justin Eddy got out of his vehicle and abandoned it there, and allegedly then stole another pickup truck connected to a flatbed trailer and hauling a piece of heavy equipment and drove it away from the scene. While his exact route of travel is unknown, investigators have determined that he did drive it through and on a few properties in the area, damaging the truck and trailer before arriving at the house where the shooting occurred.
The exact cause of what led up to this entire sequence of events is currently under investigation, and further details may be released at a later time.
Anyone with any additional information is urged to contact the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 616-527-5737.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police, Sunfield Fire Department, Portland Ambulance, Sparrow Medical Examiner’s Office, Lehman Funeral Homes, Ionia County Central Dispatch, and Reed/Hoppes Towing.
