WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI – West Bloomfield Police Officers along with neighboring jurisdictions have arrested one suspect and are looking for a second suspect in the area of Maple and Inkster.
Helicoptor and K-9 units are in the area.
Suspects are wanted for a smash and grab robbery in Commerce Township. The Smash and Grab was a jewelry heist at a Costco.
Deputies responded to the Costco Store located at 3000 Commerce Crossing for an Armed Robbery. The store manager indicated two black males, one armed with an ax and the other armed with a sledgehammer, had entered the store and proceeded to the jewelry display case. They broke the display case and ordered employees not to move. The subject then proceeded to remove jewelry from the display case.
Both suspects are 20-years-old and from Detroit, then fled the store and were last seen driving away in a white or silver colored Nissan Sentra. Police Officers from the West Bloomfield Township Police Department located the vehicle and attempted a felony traffic stop. The suspect vehicle, which was determined to have been stolen out of Wayne County, failed to stop for the officers’ signal. A vehicle pursuit was then initiated.
Multiple Sheriff’s patrol units responded to the area to assist the West Bloomfield Officers. As the suspect vehicle approached the area the W. Maple Road and Inkster Road, the driver left the roadway and began driving through the backyards of private homes. At that time, the driver struck the side of a home, continued a short distance and then struck a tree. Both occupants fled on foot into the nearby subdivision. Officers from S.O.N.I.C. were able to apprehend the passenger of the suspect vehicle. However, the driver eluded pursuing Officers.
Deputies arrived on scene and coordinated a perimeter with uniformed officers from West Bloomfield Twp. PD, Farmington Hills PD, and S.O.N.I.C., which is a multi-jurisdictional task involving local police departments from West Bloomfield Twp., Farmington Hills, and Novi. Additional Sheriff’s Office units responded to the scene and OCSO K-9 Units were deployed in the search area. K-9 Units from West Bloomfield Township also joined search efforts. The OCSO Aviation Unit arrived on scene and assisted with conducting an aerial search.
After a short period of time, the subject was spotted by officers assigned to the perimeter and another foot pursuit was initiated. The suspect again evaded officers and Deputies. The perimeter was re-established and search efforts continued. After a period of time had elapsed, coordinated search efforts utilizing uniformed Deputies and officers was discontinued and replaced with undercover units. A short time later, the suspect was observed walking near the roadway and was taken into custody by undercover S.O.N.I.C. officers.
The subjects are believed to have been involved in additional incidents around the Tri-County area. Both subjects were lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending the issuance of criminal charges. Detectives are continuing with the investigation and are coordinating their investigative efforts with several other jurisdictions. The West Bloomfield Township Police Department will be handling the pursuit. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office will be handling all criminal charges at Costco.
