DETROIT, MI – Wilburt Thomas, the father charged in connection with the July 15th, 2018, fatal car crash on I-94 that killed his seven-year-old daughter has plead guilty.
This morning Wilburt Thomas pleaded guilty to Manslaughter with a sentence agreement of 4 ½ to 15 years, Child Abuse Second Degree with a sentence agreement of 4 ½ to 10 years. For the charge of Operating While Intoxicated with an Occupant under 16 years of age, Thomas will receive credit for time served as computed by the court at the sentence hearing. All of the counts are concurrent. He will be sentenced on January 24, 2018 before Judge Bridget Hathaway.
Wilburt Dion Thomas, 47-years-old, of Detroit allegedly consumed alcohol and marijuana prior to crashing a stolen van at 1:47 a.m. July 15th, 2018, on I-94, west of Inkster Road. He struck a disabled car that was parked on the shoulder of the road. His daughter, DeSandra Thomas, left the van to find help and was hit by another vehicle.
Thomas had been charged second-degree murder; involuntary manslaughter; second-degree child abuse; operating under the influence; possession of marijuana; and having an open container of alcohol.
