Teen Charged as Adult for Assault of Man in Mt. Morris Store Parking Lot

MT. MORRIS, MI – A 16-year-old has been charged as an adult with violently assaulting a 63-year-old man in the parking lot of a Kroger store in Mt. Morris.Assault

Garrett Mathew Summerfield,16-years-old, formerly of Onaway, Michigan, now living in Flint, is charged as an adult with Assault With Intent To Murder and Assault with Intent to Rob While Unarmed.

According to the police investigation, a 63-year-old man was in the parking lot of the Kroger store on Saginaw Street in Mt. Morris around 6:30 AM on February 5th, 2019, when he was approached by Summerfield who asked for money to purchase cigarettes. When the man refused to give him money, Summerfield began punching the man repeatedly and smashed him into his vehicle several times.

The victim was able to break free from Summerfield, get into his vehicle and drive away and was later treated at McLaren Hospital for lacerations, bruising, and a possible concussion.

Summerfield will be arraigned in 67th District Court.

“This was a terrible incident that could have happened to anyone. It highlights the need for all of us to be alert to our surroundings when alone and in a public venue especially when others are not around,” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.
