LAPEER, MI – On Sunday February 10th, 2019, 28-year-old Zachary Lanctot died at McLaren Lapeer Region due to his injuries sustained in a head-on crash in Brown City.
On Wednesday January 30th, 2019, at 1:27PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic collision with reported entrapment on Van Dyke north of North Branch Road in Brown City (Lapeer County’s Burnside Township).
Investigators established that 30 year old Kevin Warnick from Lapeer was traveling north on Van Dyke driving a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. There was a significant west wind causing snow from an open farm field to blow across the roadway. Witnesses reported to deputies almost “white out” conditions occurring.
The vehicle driven by Kevin Warnick crossed the centerline into the southbound lane within the path of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by 28 year old Zachary Lanctot from Carsonville. The collision is considered “head on”. After impact, both vehicles departed to opposite shoulders of the roadway.
Both vehicles were only occupied by the drivers. Brown City Fire Department responded and extricated both drivers. Lapeer County EMS transported to McLaren in Lapeer.
Preliminary investigation suggest that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in this traffic collision. Blowing snow creating “white out” conditions and visibility reduction is considered a contributing factor.
The roadway was closed for about three hours for rescue and investigative purposes. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Brown City Fire Department (extrication); Michigan State Police- Lapeer Post (traffic control assistance); Yakes Towing in North Branch (vehicle removal); and Lapeer County Road Commission (roadway conditions).
This traffic crash remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at (phone 810-656-1015) or Deputy Bill Osborne at
