HOLLAND, MI – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Detective Unit continues the investigation into the homicide of 14-year-old Troy Wells Jr.
At 12:04AM, Saturday February 16th, 2019, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies and medics were sent to the Hampton Inn, located at 12427 Felch Street, in Holland Township, on a call of shots fired.
Upon arrival deputies found a 14 year old boy, Troy “TJ” Wells Jr., suffering from multiple gun shot wounds. TJ was transported to Holland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The hotel was checked and no other victims were found
This weekend the named suspect Claudio Estrada turned himself in to the Hidalgo Police Department in Texas. Estrada had learned of his outstanding warrants from relatives in Michigan. Through investigation with Texas authorities and after an interview with Mr. Estrada, it is not believed that Estrada was in Michigan at the time of Wells murder.
Further detectives learned of misleading/false information from some witnesses that lead to identifying Estrada as the suspect. Estrada was released from custody in Texas after being held for a short time.
With this new information and the continued investigation throughout the weekend detectives have now focused on an 18 year old Holland man (not named, nor in custody at this time). Investigators will be meeting the Ottawa County Prosecutors Office on Monday (February 18) to discuss new charges in connection to the murder and also possible charges for the false information to police.
