LAPEER, MI – On Thursday February 21st, 2019, at 5:17 AM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to an injury traffic crash on Millington Road west of Rich Road in Mayville (Lapeer County’s Rich Township).
A 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix (light gray in color) was traveling east on Millington Road driven by a 23 year old man from Millington. This vehicle was behind another eastbound vehicle and transferred into the westbound lane to overtake while within a no passing zone. This occurred near the crest of a hill.
The Grand Prix struck a westbound 2004 Ford Focus (dark gray in color) driven by 32 year old Kevin Newbegin from Clifford. The collision is considered “head on” and occurred at the crest of the hill within the westbound lane. Post impact, the Grand Prix stayed within the westbound lane while the Ford Focus departed the north side of the roadway into a residential yard.
Watertown Township Fire Department (Fostoria) and Deerfield Township Fire and Rescue (North Branch) responded to extricate the drivers and lone occupants of each vehicle.
Kevin Newbegin was pronounced dead at the scene. The 23 year old male from Millington was transported to McLaren in Lapeer and is listed in serious condition.
Preliminary investigation does not suggest that either alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. Weather and environment are not considered factors. Lapeer County Sheriff’s Reconstructionist will perform an analysis to determine if excessive speed over the 55 MPH posted limit played a role.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Deerfield Township Fire Department and Watertown Township Fire Department. The roadway was closed for three hours for rescue, investigative, and removal of vehicles.
This remains an active investigation by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies. Anyone with information is requested to contact Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-656-1015 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be presented to the Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if formal criminal charges will be filed.
