Inmate Dies in Monroe County Jail

MONROE, MI – Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone is reporting the in-custody death of an inmate at the Monroe County Jail.

On Saturday, February 23rd, 2019, at approximately 10:30 am, an inmate was found hanging in his cell by jail correction officers.

The officers immediately removed the ligature from the inmate’s neck and performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The officers continued CPR until members from the Monroe City Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance arrived on scene who continued to administer CPR. After continued life saving measures, the 32-year-old man from Newport, Michigan died.

Out of respect for the family, the victim’s identity is being withheld at this time. The Sheriff’s Office is saddened at the loss of life and extends their condolences to the individual’s family.

The incident remains under investigation by members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau.
