Michigan State Police issued the following statement after the verdict: “The Michigan State Police appreciates the careful deliberation of the men and women of the jury and we are grateful to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for their dedication to justice. We send our sincere condolences to the family, friends and supporters of Damon Grimes.”
On October 31, 2018, the first trial was declared a mistrial due to a hung jury. Today, in the second trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict on the charge of Involuntary Manslaughter.
The defendant was remanded to jail and his sentence hearing will be held on May 2, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Margaret Van Houten.
“The jury made a strong statement today about the defendant’s criminal actions. This verdict was a result of a lot of hard work by my office and law enforcement. I want to thank this jury and it is my earnest hope that this verdict brings some small semblance of peace to the Grimes family,” said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
