GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, MI – On Friday June 14th, 2019, at 11:10PM, deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two vehicle injury crash at the intersection of westbound Chicago Drive and 18th Avenue in Georgetown Township.
The preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that a 17-year-old Georgetown Township resident was driving a Saturn sedan southbound on 18th Avenue when she did not stop for a red flashing signal light at the intersection with westbound Chicago Drive.
A GMC Sierra driven by a 52-year-old man from Texas was westbound on Chicago Drive with a flashing yellow signal when both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time. The GMC struck the Saturn broadside on the driver’s door which pushed the Saturn into a power pole in the median of Chicago Drive.
Georgetown Township Fire Rescue responded to extricate the occupants of both vehicles involved at which time the patients were turned over to LIFE EMS.
17-year-old Sydney Carfine of Georgetown Township was transported to Butterworth Hospital by LIFE EMS where she was later died.
The driver and passenger of the GMC Sierra were both transported to Butterworth Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The westbound lanes of Chicago Drive had been closed due to the crash which remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
