78 yr old Bicyclist Struck and Killed in Monroe County

EXETER TOWNSHIP, MI – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a fatal vehicle versus bicyclist traffic crash, which occurred on Steffas Road, north of Heiss Road, in Exeter Township.fatal crash

The crash occurred on Thursday, July 4th, 2019 at approximately 4:45 PM.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Karen L. Spicer, age 78-years-old, of Monroe, was riding her bicycle northbound on Steffas Road when she was struck by a gray in color Jeep Renegade. The Jeep Renegade was traveling northbound on Steffas Road in the southbound travel lane attempting to overtake the bicyclist, when the bicyclist made an unexpected left turn in front of the vehicle. The Jeep Renegade was being operated by Shari Litten, 56-years-old, of Carleton.

Karen Spicer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the Jeep Renegade was not injured in the crash.

Neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.

Exeter Township Fire Department, LMR Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance Service, assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Deputies Nick Burkhart and Brian Francisco of the Traffic Services Division, along with Deputies Kelsea Reed and Jeremy Peters of the Uniform Services Division.
