FORT GRATIOT, MI – Four suspects from Detroit are in custody after a robbery at the Kay Jewelers store, located at Birchwood Mall in Fort Gratiot Township.
Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office were called to the mall shortly before 7:30 this evening regarding a robbery that had just taken place at the store. While they were enroute, Central Dispatch told deputies the suspects had run out of the mall and had gotten into a red Chevrolet Impala. The suspects left the mall at a high rate of speed southbound on 24th Avenue. Deputies began searching for the vehicle, along with officers from the Port Huron Police Department and troopers from Michigan State Police.
A Port Huron Police Unit located the vehicle in the area of Gratiot Avenue and Hancock Street in the city of Port Huron. The suspects refused to stop and a short chase ensued. The vehicle finally stopped in the area of Riverside Drive and I-94. Three suspects got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Two of them were captured almost immediately, along with a suspect that had remained in the vehicle. The fourth suspect was caught a short time later, a short distance away. All suspects were in custody within 20 minutes of the call of the robbery.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office went to Kay Jewelers, where they were told three suspects came into the store, smashed a glass jewelry counter, grabbed an unknown amount of jewelry and ran back out of the store in a matter of seconds. Other witnesses were able to tell detectives the three suspects had jumped into a red vehicle, with a driver waiting for them.
The suspects, three 17 year old males and a 19 year old man, all from Detroit are lodged at the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center, where they will await arraignment on robbery and other charges.
