SOUTH HAVEN, MI – South Haven Area Emergency Services responded at 12:28 p.m. Saturday, July 13th, 2019, to the South Beach on a report of persons struggling in the Lake Michigan water.
Within three minutes of the dispatch, officers from the South Haven Police Department and SHAES responders were on scene. One adult had been rescued by a paddleboarder but a child was reported still in the water. Approximately 22 minutes later the child was located about 100 yards from shore by a male adult who had joined in the search.
Rescue efforts, including CPR, were initiated immediately and continued during transport to Bronson South Haven Hospital. Despite the rescue efforts the 13-year boy was pronounced dead. The victim and his family were visiting from Ann Arbor.
Witnesses reported the individuals had been swimming and began to drift away from shore and became exhausted, not able to swim back. The yellow flag was flying at the South Beach.
Assisting at the scene was the U.S. Coast Guard and Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department.
