LYON TOWNSHIP, MI – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting deputies with the investigation of a fatal crash that occurred near the intersection of Pontiac Trail and Ward Road in the Township of Lyon at approximately 1:35PM.
A 2018 Ford Fusion, driven by an 86-year-old man, from South Lyon, was traveling west on Pontiac Trail in the curves by Ward Rd. The front seat passenger of the Ford Fusion was the 86-year-old wife of the driver.
The Fusion entered the curves and crossed the center line where it struck a 2009 Ford Escape being driven by a 20-year-old woman from New Hudson. Front seat passenger in the 2009 Escape was a 20-year-old man from Milford.
After striking the Escape, the Fusion continued into the curve and drove into on-coming traffic where it collided with a 2017 Ford Escape headed eastbound. The driver of the 2017 Ford Escape was a 54-year-old man from New Hudson and was the lone occupant of the vehicle.
The passengers in the Ford Fusion and the 2017 Escape were transported to Providence Park Hospital in Novi. The 86-year-old female passenger in the Fusion succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Fusion is listed in critical condition and the driver of the 2017 Escape is listed in stable condition. The occupants in the 2009 Escape were not injured in the crash.
There was no airbag deployment in the 2009 Escape but there was airbag deployment in the second collision for both vehicles.
The driver of the Fusion was the only occupant not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the Fusion may have suffered a medical emergency prior to crossing the center line.
The crash remains under investigation.
