Two Men Charged in Pier Park Crash

DETROIT, MI – Dawaun Al McQueen,  23-years-old, of Clinton Township, and Michael Thomas Sims, 29-years-old, of Chesterfield Township, have been charged in connection with a car chase with another vehicle that began at 7 Mile Road and Hoover in Detroit and ended in Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms.

The victims in the case were three Detroit men in their twenties.

On July 13, 2019, at approximately 5:58 a.m., Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety Officers were dispatched to Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms about a vehicle submerged in the water of the park.

It is alleged that Dawaun McQueen and Michael Sims were involved in a chase with another car when they crashed into Pier Park. It is further alleged that the actions of the two posed a significant threat to victims, witnesses and the public. They were apprehended by the Grosse Pointe Farms police on the day of the incident.  The facts and evidence in the case will be presented in court at the Preliminary Examination.

Duwaun McQueen has been charged with the following offenses:

  •                Assault with intent to murder (3 counts)
  •                Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder (3 counts)
  •                Assault with a dangerous weapon (3 counts)
  •                Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury
  •                Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle
  •                Carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle
  •                Possession with intent to deliver less than 50 grams of cocaine
  •                Felon-in-possession of a firearm
  •                Felon-in-possession of ammunition
  •                Fleeing and eluding—3rd degree
  •                Felony firearm—(14 counts)

Michael Sims has been charged with  charged with the following offenses:

  •                 Assault with intent to murder (3 counts)
  •                Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder (3 counts)
  •                Assault with a dangerous weapon (3 counts)
  •                Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle causing injury
  •                Discharge of a firearm from a vehicle
  •                Carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle
  •                Felony Firearm (11 counts)

McQueen and Sims are expected to be arraigned in  Grosse Pointe Farms Municipal Court before Judge Matthew R. Rumora at 3:30 p.m. today.
