PONTIAC, MI – A 34-year-old man was found shot to death lying in the middle of a roadway in Pontiac on Friday July 19th, 2019.
At approximately 2:38AM, Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 700 block of Melrose Street on the report of a subject lying in the middle of the road. Upon their arrival, deputies found a man lying in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue, north of Melrose. The subject had suffered an obvious gunshot wound to his head. The victim was not breathing.
Paramedics from the Waterford Regional Fire Department and from Star EMS arrived to provide medical care. Paramedics were unable to revive the victim. Paramedics provided telemetry to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where a physician pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Deputies located the victim’s girlfriend who had called 9-1-1. She and a friend could not find him at his residence and went looking for him. They found him lying in the street and called 9-1-1 for help.
Deputies established a perimeter and requested a Detective. Detectives and the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office were notified and responded to the scene. A single spent shell casing from a firearm was found lying near the victim. The OCSO Forensic Science Laboratory was requested and responded to process the scene. Deputies canvassed the area for perspective witnesses and possible surveillance video. An autopsy has been scheduled.
Detectives are continuing with the investigation.
There are no known suspects at this time. This is the 3rd homicide in Pontiac this year. At this same time last year, there had been 13 homicides. That is a significant drop in this category of violent crime for the City of Pontiac.
