LAPEER, MI – On Saturday July 20th, 2019, at 3:06 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies, Michigan State Police Troopers, and Lapeer County EMS Ambulance Service to a private residence located on Oregon Road west of Millville Road in Lapeer (Lapeer County’s Elba Township) for a report of a seven year old child that was witnessed to become submerged within a pond.
There was a family reunion with multiple people attending at the residence. A seven and six year old child, who were cousins, traveled a few hundred feet away from the residence to a pond located upon the property. The children were not swimming but attempting to catch frogs along the shoreline.
It was reported that the seven year old entered the water attempting to catch a frog and submerged below the water’s surface according to the six year old. The six year old returned to the house and reported this to adults who called 911.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office activated the dive team, canine division, and search team. Law enforcement and EMS entered the water locking arms (forming a chain) to conduct a preliminary search along the shoreline.
The pond was estimated between 10 feet and 15 feet deep. Around 3:30 PM, Michigan State Police Trooper Joel Perkins who was participating in the water search located the submerged child. The child was found within the area of last sighting by the six year old.
The child was brought to shore and unresponsive. Lapeer County EMS transported the child to McLaren in Lapeer with lifesaving efforts occurring. Unfortunately, the child was pronounced deceased within the emergency division of McLaren in Lapeer just after 4:00 PM.
The Lapeer County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy which determined that the cause of death was drowning. This case remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.
