DEWITT, MI – The preliminary findings of the investigation into a multi-car fatal crash that occurred on July 19th, 2019, at the intersection of Business 127 and Cutler Road, in Dewitt Township, that resulted in the death of David G. Engel indicate the Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper was the at-fault driver.
As a result, the MSP yesterday suspended the trooper pending completion of the investigation and review by the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office.
Preliminary investigation found that shortly after 8 p.m., the trooper was responding with emergency lights and siren activated to a retail theft in progress. The trooper was westbound on Cutler Road when he entered the intersection striking the rear of a semi-truck that was traveling northbound on Business 127. As a result of that collision, the semi-truck struck the vehicle occupied by Engel that was stopped southbound on Business 127, waiting to turn left on Cutler Road.
David Engel, 26-years-old, of DeWitt, the vehicle’s lone occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper was treated and released from the hospital; the semi-truck driver was uninjured in the crash.
When the investigation is completed, it will be forwarded to the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential criminal charges.
