BENTON HARBOR, MI – While on patrol in the city of Benton Harbor, Michigan State Police Troopers observed a 2007 BMW passenger vehicle, without a license plate, traveling at a high rate of speed.
On August 2nd, 2019, at about 8:38PM. MSP troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, however, the driver of the BMW attempted to elude the troopers by speeding away. A pursuit was initiated which eventually headed south bound on Colfax into Benton Township.
During the pursuit, the suspect lost control of his vehicle south of Elmside Rd., crossed the center lane, and slammed into a utility pole. The vehicle continued to roll ejecting the driver, who was the only occupant of that car. The 22-year-old Benton Harbor man was taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph and then transferred by helicopter to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids due to serious injuries received in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation and it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
