LUDINGTON, MI – A pedestrian, who was killed on US10 near Dennis Road on Saturday morning, has been identified as Cecilia Knowles, 25-years-old, of Walkerville.
On Saturday, August 10th, 2019, at 3:08 AM, deputies with the Mason County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle/pedestrian crash on US10 west of Dennis Road Mason County’s Amber Township.
The investigation has revealed Cecilia Knowles was a passenger in a friend’s vehicle that was heading eastbound on US10 when she began to argue with the driver.
The driver of that vehicle alleges Ms. Knowles punched him in the face and he had an injury to his face to support that claim. Ms. Knowles got out of the vehicle in the Burger King parking lot around 2:30 AM and allegedly refused to get back in, despite several attempts by the driver who encouraged her to do so. The driver of that vehicle then left the scene and Ms. Knowles.
At 3:01 AM, a vehicle traveling eastbound on US10 had to swerve to miss the woman who was then walking in the road. Being very concerned, that driver called 911 after making several attempts to get the woman off the roadway but she refused to do so.
Three MCSO deputies, on a domestic call in the 3900 block of N. US31, were notified of a person walking in the road at 3:04 AM. A deputy at that call cleared at 3:04 AM and was responding to that area of US10 & Dennis Rd. Four minutes later, as the deputy was heading west on US10 from the US31 bypass, Cecilia Knowles was struck and killed by an eastbound 2004 KIA passenger vehicle. The KIA was also traveling eastbound on US10 in the right lane and was being driven by a 51 year-old Branch MI man. He was uninjured in the crash. His passenger, a 34 year-old Branch MI woman, was treated at Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Life EMS, MCSO Reconstruction Team, and Pere Marquette Township Fire all responded to the scene.
Neither speed nor alcohol appear to have been involved on behalf of the driver of the vehicle and toxicology tests are pending on the deceased. The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
