MOUNT HOPE, MI – On Wednesday October 23rd, 2019,  at 2:04PM, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office Transport Unit was taking a group of inmates from Veteran’s Memorial Courthouse in Downtown Lansing (30th Circuit Ct) back to the Ingham County Jail.

While in route to Mason, traveling southbound on US-127, just south of Mount Hope, inmate Marquis Emmanuel Oliver, a 21-year-old man, from Lansing, managed to open the sliding side door of the transport van and jumped onto US-127 while the van was travelling at highway speed. Oliver had been lodged at the Ingham County Jail on a variety of charges since January 2019.

The transport deputy called for priority backup for an attempt escape/man down.  Several units from LPD, MSUPD, ELPD and ICSO arrived on scene.  Mr. Oliver was gravely injured and lifesaving measures were attempted by several police officers.  It does not appear that he was struck by any vehicles, rather his injuries were a result of him jumping from the van.

Marquis Oliver was transported to Sparrow Hospital where he later died from his injuries.  The Michigan State Police were called to the scene to investigate the incident and their investigation is still on going.

On behalf of the entire Sheriff’s Office, they extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Oliver.  They will continue to work with the Michigan State Police to determine a cause of this tragic event.
