MACOMB TOWNSHIP, MI. – On Saturday November 2nd, 2019, at approximately 12:30pm, a resident on Marina Circle, a street near Sabrina Dr., observed a small dog outside her home. The dog appeared injured and was wearing a collar with a tag. The resident contacted the owner who picked up the dog. The dog located was Nella. The owner transported Nella to a vet where it was treated and has been released to its owner.
On October 30th, 2019, at approximately 3:00pm, Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Sabrina Dr. for an animal cruelty complaint. The resident wanted to report her dog missing and believed foul play to be involved.
Deputies spoke with the resident who stated she has a ten pound Havanese female dog “Nella” that she placed into her crate before leaving the home this morning. When she returned several hours later, she found Nella was missing and the crate had been smashed. Along with the damaged crate, other evidence of foul play including hair, feces, and what is believed to be blood, was located in various areas of the home. The resident stated a 27 year old male who also resided in the home had been the only one there during the time foul play was suspected.
The resident was able to provide investigators with surveillance footage from her home which showed the male carrying Nella by her neck out of the home. The footage also showed the male placing a hammer and backpack into his vehicle.
When the man, Andrea Biondo, returned to the residence he was placed under arrest and brought to the Macomb County Jail. At the time of his arrest, Biondo was found to be in possession of heroin and Suboxone. Investigators spoke with Biondo who confessed to harming the dog, however, stated the dog ran away. Although a search of the area has been completed, Nella has not been located.
“This small animal stood no chance against this man and that is where the law steps in. Nella, just like so many other pets, are a part of one’s family. This hateful behavior towards any living creature, animal or human, is unacceptable.” – Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham
The above information was presented to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office and a 3 count warrant was issued:
Count 1: Animals – Killing/Torturing – Second Degree (felony)
Count 2: Controlled Substance – Possession (Cocaine, Heroin or Another Narcotic) (felony)
Count 3: Controlled substance – Possession
Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith stated, “This type of brutality towards animals is exactly why we started our Task Force, P.A.W.S.” Smith continued “Our Office has authorized the most serious charges against this defendant, and will do everything in our power to ensure justice for Nella.”
Biondo was arraigned in the 41-A Shelby Township District Court on 11/1/19. He was given a $20,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court on 11/07/19 at 2:00pm.
