30 yr old Man Accidentally Shoots Friend in Lapeer County

LAPEER, MI – On Friday 11/08/2019 at 7:04 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies and Michigan State Police Troopers to Kelch Road in Mayville (Lapeer County’s Rich Township) for a shooting.

A 30-year-old man from Silverwood was contacted by two 29 year-old male friends from Lake Orion and made arrangements to visit property on Kelch Road in Mayville to look at deer hunting sites and engage in small game hunting. After the tour and activities on the property concluded for the evening, the trio returned to their truck.

The 30 year old from Silverwood and a 29 year old friend were unloading their weapons alongside the truck. The 30 year old had his weapon pointed (12 gauge shot gun) toward the 29 year old friend. The weapon discharged and pellets struck the 29 year old from Lake Orion within the lower regions of his torso. Deputies were informed that it was not believed that the weapon was loaded.

The 30 year old departed the scene before law enforcement arrived and returned to his
residence in Silverwood. The individual did call 911 and make arrangements to surrender at his residence shortly after the event. The individual was taken into custody by deputies without event.

The 29 year old gunshot victim was transferred to McLaren in Lapeer. The individual was later transferred to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit were they remain hospitalized in stable condition.

The 30 year old was immediately lodged at the Lapeer County Jail for this incident and an unrelated arrest warrant. On Saturday 11/09/2019, the case was presented to Lapeer County Prosecutor’s Office.

The following formal criminal charges were issued.

  1. Felon in possession of firearm
  2. Firearm | careless discharge causing injury
  3. 2 Counts Felony Firearm
  4. Possession of a Firearm while Intoxicated

On Tuesday 11/12/2019 at 8:30 AM, Brill was arraigned by Lapeer’s 71-A District Court
Magistrate Mike Delling. Bond was set at $10,000 and next court appearance (probable cause conference) scheduled within the 71-A District Court of Lapeer on 11/22/2019. Brill remains in custody at the Lapeer County Jail.
