PONTIAC, MI – An Oakland County Sheriff Deputy was injured when he responded to a call concerning a possible road rage incident where one of the drivers brandished a weapon.
On Saturday January 26th, 2020, at approximately 2:57 PM, Oakland County Sheriff Deputies responded to the area of Orchard Lake Rd and S. Johnson Street on the report of a possible road rage incident. The caller, a 48-year-old man from Pontiac, indicated that while stopped at a red traffic signal the vehicle in front of him, a blue Chevrolet Cruz, did not move when the traffic light turned green. The caller stated that he sounded his horn to gain the driver’s attention. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruz then brandished a pistol.
The caller was able to provide responding officers with the license plate information of the Chevrolet Cruz and last known direction of travel to the Sheriff’s Operations Center. Deputies immediately deployed to the address provided by the vehicle registration. They saw the 18-year-old suspect driving the vehicle toward the address on the registration
Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The suspect was ordered to step out of the vehicle at which point he accelerated away while the Deputy was still holding onto his arm. The Deputy was knocked to the ground and sustained a minor injury to his hand. The suspect vehicle struck a retaining wall a short distance away and the driver then fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers noted the while the suspect was trying to flee the scene, he was carrying a gun with an extended magazine in his hand.
More Deputies responded to assist. Responding Deputies were able to apprehend the suspect a short distance away. A Taurus 9mm pistol was recovered buried in the snow near the scene with one round in the chamber and 21 more rounds in the magazine. The firearm came back clear and not registered to anyone.
The Deputy was treated at the scene by Paramedics from Star EMS. The suspect complained of shortness of breath and was transported to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where he was examined and medically cleared for incarceration. The suspect was lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending the issuance of criminal charges.
