DEARBORN, MI – The Dearborn Police Department has received several reports of catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles.catalytic converter

A catalytic converter is an emissions control part that makes gases and pollutants in exhaust less toxic before they leave the vehicle.  The converters are located on the underside of vehicles as part of the exhaust system. They contain small amounts of valuable metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, which can be sold.  Thieves are crawling underneath vehicles and are removing the catalytic converter by cutting it off of the vehicle.  It appears that thieves are targeting Honda Civic’s from 2004-2006 model years.  These recent incidents appear to be occurring in the morning hours between 5 AM-7 AM.  Residents are asked to keep an eye out for any suspicious subjects near vehicles.

Residents are asked to take steps to protect their vehicles.  Residents can do the following to protect their vehicles:

  1. Park in well-lit areas.

  2. Park close to building entrances or the nearest road in public parking lots. This leaves your car in a location where many people can see it.

  3. If you have a garage, keep your car parked inside with the door shut.

  4. Add video surveillance to the area where you regularly park your car.

  5. Use a vehicle security system.

  6. Report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood to the Police by calling 911 or the Suspicious Activity Phone Line at 313.943.3030

Chief Haddad said, “The Dearborn Police Department will continue to work with regional law enforcement partners to aggressively pursue, apprehend and vigorously prosecute these suspects”.
