ROYAL OAK, MI – Michigan State Police are continuing to investigate a double fatal crash that occurred early Tuesday morning on East bound I-696 that killed two men from the Detroit area.
Two men were killed on I-696 this Tuesday morning after they had been involved in a minor accident between the two of them. It is believed that they were struck by two vehicles after they had exited their autos and were standing near their cars when they were struck by oncoming traffic.
On February 11th, 2020, at approximately 5:30 AM, troopers responded to a fatal traffic crash on East bound I-696 near Woodward Ave.
The preliminary information from Michigan State Police (MSP Metro Detroit), stated that two vehicles were involved in a minor crash.
Both drivers had exited their vehicles and were standing next to their vehicles. It is unknown if they were talking or attempting to direct traffic. Traffic was continuing at highway speeds on eastbound I-696.
Both drivers, now pedestrians, of the previous crash were struck by the oncoming traffic. Both died at the scene of the accident At this time it is believed they were struck by two separate cars.
The drivers have been identified as a 61-year-old man from Westland and a 39-year-old man from Oak Park.
One of the drivers that struck the pedestrians was admitted to a local hospital. The second was treated and released.
