Charges Approved in Brutal Beating Death of Renowned Hair Stylist Bashar Kallabat

DETROIT, MI – Tuesday evening, February 11th, 2020, renowned hair stylist Bashar Kallabat was found beaten to death inside a room at the JZ Motel on Detroit’s east side. Charges against the suspect in this brutal murder have been approved by the Wayne County Prosecutors Office.

Thanks to surveillance video provided by Project Green Light a suspect was developed. That man was located and taken into custody the next day following the murder of 56-year-old Bashar Kallabat.

Jimmy Jermaine Pickett, 24-years-old, of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the homicide of Bashar Kallabat, of Bloomfield Hills.

On February 11, 2020 at 10:31 p.m. Detroit Police officers were dispatched to a motel located in the 14700 block of East 8 Mile Road in Detroit.  When they arrived at the motel room, they observed Mr. Kallabat with head trauma. It was determined that he died from blunt force trauma.

The investigation by Detroit Police led to the identification and arrest of Jimmy Pickett.  It is alleged that Pickett entered Mr. Kallabat’s hotel room, killed him, took the victim’s personal property, and left the motel.

Aspects of the case remain under investigation. Further facts and evidence in the case will be presented in court at the Preliminary Examination.

Jimmy Pickett has been charged with First Degree Felony Murder, a charge which carries a penalty of Life in Prison without Parole.  He was arraigned in 36th District Court before Judge Laura Echartea at 2:30 p.m. on February 14th. He was remanded to jail with no bail. His Probable Cause Conference is on February 28, 2020 at 8:30 a.m., and his Preliminary Examination is on March 6, 2020 at 1:30 p.m.
