Man Charged in Wick Road Standoff in Romulus


ROMULUS, MI – Chad Alexander Smith, 33-years-old, is being charged in connection with an attempted carjacking, shoot out with Romulus Police, a subsequent hostage situation and standoff in Romulus. CHAD ALEXANDER SMITH

On August 3, 2018 at approximately 5:23 p.m., Michigan State Police were contacted by the Romulus Police Department for assistance regarding a previously injured man inside a residence in the 34540 block of Wick Road in Romulus.  Shortly after the arrival of Michigan State troopers, and Romulus Police officers present, the standoff ended when the defendant surrendered.

It is alleged that on August 3, 2018, Chad Smith attempted to carjack a Romulus resident in the 9370 block of Lisa Street but abandoned the attempt.  It is also alleged that Smith jumped the backyard fence of the residence of the Wick Road address, encountered a dog and shot it.  It is further alleged that Smith then encountered Romulus Police officers and a shoot-out ensued before he entered the residence.  Smith was injured in the shoot-out and while in the residence, took a seven-year-old boy hostage for several hours before the standoff ended with the defendant’s surrender to the police.

Smith has been charged with:

  1. Assault With Intent to Murder – two counts;
  2. Kidnapping;
  3. Carjacking;
  4. Home Invasion – First Degree;
  5. Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm – two counts;
  6. Felon in Possession of a Firearm;
  7. Animals – Killing/Torturing;
  8. Assaulting/Resisting/Obstructing the Police – two counts and
  9. Felony Firearm – 11 counts.

Smith is expected to be arraigned March 11, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. in 34th District Court in Romulus.
