ATLANTA, MI – The Montmorency County jail is located in the small village of Atlanta in northern Michigan. 34-year-old Jeffrey Allen Markby was being held there on a charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance. Markby made the decision to escape after he was let outside for recreation on Sunday.
Jeffrey Markby was able to climb over a chain link fence covered with razor wire at the top and escape after he was let outside for recreation time early Sunday evening, March 22nd, 2020. He was able to make his escape by using something to cover the razor wire at the top of a chain link fence.
Sheriff’s Deputies began searching for him. They were able to determine that he had injured himself during his escape.
An alert motorist saw Jeff Markby as he was seen running into the Briley Township Cemetery. Officers were able to easily start tracking his whereabouts after they found an orange jail issued sweat shirt and then they located his shoes that he had removed and left behind.
Markby was captured at 10:38 AM Monday morning. He was located in a travel trailer behind a residence in the Village of Atlanta. The fugitive surrendered without any complications. He was transported to the nearest medical facility for treatment of his injuries and for his exposure to the elements over night while hiding out.
It is unclear if others assisted Jeffrey Markby to escape. That is being investigated.
Until the out door recreation area has been further evaluated and possible escape routes are identified, inmate will be limited in the time that they are able to use that area of the facility.
Michigan State Police Fugitive Task Force, MSP Emergency Response Team, the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team, Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers, and an MSP K-9 unit all assisted in the search of the wayward fugitive.
