PONTIAC, MI – Suicide appears to have claimed yet another life behind bars at the Oakland County Jail. On Saturday April 11th, 2020, a 32-year-old Madison Heights man took his own life while he awaited his fate on multiple drug and weapons charges.
At 2:29 PM, an Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted rounds and observed an inmate in good condition and verbally spoke with them. At 2:46 PM, the Deputy observed the inmate to be on lying in bed and was covered by a blanket. After not receiving a response from the inmate, the Deputy along with other responding Deputies, entered the cell and found the inmate to have a blanket attached to his feet and wrapped around his neck as a ligature. Deputies and Oakland County Jail staff began CPR, and used an AED, where a pulse was able to be obtained. The inmate was transported by Star EMS to St. Joseph – Oakland Hospital where he was placed on life support and was listed in critical condition.
At 1:40 AM, on Sunday April 12th, 2020, the inmate was pronounced deceased and their next of kin was notified. An autopsy was conducted by the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office at 8:20 AM and was ruled Suicide by Self Strangulation.
The inmate was lodged in the Oakland County Jail on April 8th, 2020, by Madison Heights Police Department for Operating/Manufacturing a Methamphetamine Laboratory, (4) Counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Delivery/Manufacture Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Short-Barreled Shotgun, and Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer. The inmate was arraigned in 43rd District Court on a $100,000 cash surety bond. The inmate was also waiting to be arraigned on charges from the Michigan State Police and had an extradition warrant for Dangerous Drugs out of Tennessee.
The inmate was screened at intake and indicated he was not suicidal and made no statements to the contrary. He was housed in a single cell. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit is investigating this case.
