MONROE TOWNSHIP, MI – The driver who was killed in a fatal traffic crash on I-75, north of Mortar Creek Road, in Monroe Township, on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020, has been identified.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, who has been identified as Daniel Patrick Diehl, 45-years-old, of Gibraltar, was driving a white in color 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, southbound on I-75, in the right travel lane. For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet struck a blue in color 2018 Freightliner tractor trailer in the rear. The Freightliner was traveling at a low speed being driven by a 29-year-old Brampton, Ontario man.
After the crash, both vehicles came to rest in the right travel lane. The driver of the Chevrolet, Daniel Diehl, who was pinned in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Freightliner was not injured. The driver of the Chevrolet, and the driver of the Freightliner, were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Speed does not appear to be a factor. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol was a factor.
Monroe Community Ambulance, Monroe Township Fire Department and the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore, Paul Galloro and Jon Cregar of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Bureau along with Deputy Ryan Eyler of the Uniform Services Division.
