HOLLAND, MI – In what is believed to be two unrelated incidents but in the same general area of Holland State Park, a 17-year-old boy and a 6-year-old boy were last seen in the water of Lake Michigan.
On Saturday June 6th, 2020, at 4:55 p.m., the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Holland State Park in reference to a missing 17 year old male.
Witness statements provided to Deputies stated 2 brothers from Grand Rapids, ages 17 and 19, were swimming off the beach and began to struggle in the water. The first subject, the 19 year old male began to swim back to shore and was thrown a lifering by witnesses. With the aid of the lifering he was safely assisted to shore. The second subject, a 17 year old male, was last seen struggling in the water 40-50 yards off shore. Identification is being withheld at this time.
While on scene investigating the Sheriff’s Deputies were advised of a missing 6 year old boy. He was reported last seen in Lake Michigan in waist deep water. At this time the boys whereabouts are unknown. The boy, Iain Isaiah Rowe is a 6 year old white male slightly over 4 feet tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue and white vertically stripped swimsuit. If anyone has seen Iain you are asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 1-800-249-0911.
Lake conditions at the time had waves 4-6 feet in height with a reported rip current by witnesses. At this time the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the US Coast Guard are actively searching for both subjects on land and water.
At this point it is believed the incidents are unrelated and further information will be provided as the search continues.
The Sheriff’s Office Dive Team/Marine Unit continues to search the waters of Lake Michigan adjacent to the Holland State Park. Assets from the OCSO and the MSP are in the water at this time. Drivers have also been in the water at the time of this release. At this point they are unable to locate either victim.
The 17 yr old presumed drowning victim is Christian Ngabo of Grand Rapids.
